I’m going to just go ahead and say this now – we’re going to hear about Benghazi until at least 2016. The truth of the matter is, the only reason why Republicans keep bringing up Benghazi is because it’s about the only thing they have to use against Hillary Clinton when she runs for president.
Republicans love to go on and on about how the mainstream media is ignoring Benghazi and how the White House is just awful for their handling of the entire situation. There have been so many conspiracy theories concocted by the right that I’ve probably forgotten more than I can remember.
The ironic thing is, most conservatives I ask about Benghazi don’t even know exactly why they should be outraged. In most of their minds it’s some giant conspiracy to cover up something relating to President Obama. They think Obama wanted to downplay a terrorist attack by issuing fake talking points to feed to the media in an elaborate attempt to hide something.
Honestly, I can’t even keep up anymore. It’s just embarrassing.
Four Americans dying in Benghazi is a tragedy and I’m sure the vast majority of Americans felt awful that they died. But basically every official investigation from nonpartisan organizations pertaining to Benghazi has essentially said there was no “cover up” of any kind, and that both the White House and Congress could have probably done more to prevent the loss of life.
Republicans, however, are just obsessed with trying to make some giant deal out of the White House not calling it a terrorist attack immediately after it happened. After all, all of their other ridiculous conspiracies have fallen through, this is about all they have left.
Instead of accepting all of the investigations that have basically came to the same conclusion, Republicans are still pushing for more. Instead of honoring the lives lost and coming up with better strategies to utilize so it’s less likely to happen again, Republicans are still stuck in 2012 pushing distractions.
Distractions from the $310 billion in tax breaks for the rich they just voted to give (added directly to the deficit by the way), much of them going to corporate tax cheats who already use every loophole they can to get out of paying their fair share. Oh, but $12 million for at-risk foster children is way too much!
We’re all sorry that people died in Benghazi, and as a country we mourned. But it’s been nearly two years and conservatives are still trying to create some giant story about what Susan Rice claimed led to the attack. It’s like when Hillary Clinton asked, “What difference does it make” about why the embassy was attacked? Her point being that it doesn’t matter if a video caused it, or it was a planned attack, four Americans were dead and the important issue was what actually happened – not why.
The reality is the only people who care about what talking points were handed out the weekend immediately following the attack are people who would never vote for President Obama or Hillary Clinton to begin with. So why are they dishonoring the dead by pushing the same nonsense that either doesn’t matter or has already been investigated? It just doesn’t make any sense coming from so-called “patriots.”
That’s why most of the media ignores this ongoing Benghazi conspiracy nonsense – because they’re not pandering to conservative voters and Republicans in Congress the way Fox News does.
But Republicans, I’ll make a deal with you. When you folks act this outraged about the over 4,000 Americans who’ve died in Iraq based on George W. Bush’s lie – then we’ll talk about Benghazi some more just to go over all the evidence that’s already debunked your nonsense. Deal?
