By now it’s no secret that the two Nevada shooters were far-right radicals with ties to the infamous Cliven Bundy standoff back in April. And while I normally would say that we can’t judge a whole group of people based off the monstrous actions of a few, I don’t exactly feel that way in this instance.
These two shooters had clear anti-government sentiments and purposely targeted police officers.
Is that really so different from those who gathered at the Bundy ranch, almost giddy about a possible armed showdown with federal agents? These same people were planning to use women as “human shields” against federal agents.
Or what about the armed Bundy supporters who set up checkpoints along Nevada highways, trying to ensure federal agents didn’t come near Bundy’s ranch?
Then there’s the hooded gunmen in Utah who threatened the lives of federal agents who were simply out driving around on duty on that day.
For a while now, many of these anti-government radicals have seemingly been itching for an excuse to “rise up” against any form of government possible. Not only that, but up until Cliven Bundy was caught on video going off on a racist rant, Fox News had been essentially propping him and his supporters up as “conservative heroes.”
But it didn’t take long for the ugly parts of these anti-government radicals to surface. After all, is it really that surprising to have seen Bundy’s racist rant, then hear that these two Nevada shooters (who were Bundy supporters) were also white supremacists? It’s clear that for many of these anti-government radical conservatives, racism is prevalent.
Granted there was never bloodshed between Bundy’s supporters and armed federal agents. But many of those who showed up to support Nevada’s welfare rancher were preparing for just such a firefight.
So when conservatives make the argument that guns aren’t the problem, it’s mental illness that’s the problem, is it really that far-fetched for someone like myself to see radicals who believe in armed rebellions against our government as being “too mentally ill” to own guns?
Because that’s exactly who these Nevada shooters were. However, just a few weeks ago they were proud, patriotic Americans supporting Cliven Bundy against the big bad federal government by way of their Second Amendment rights. Now a few weeks later they’re murderers who killed two police officers and another innocent bystander.
Am I saying all Cliven Bundy supporters are capable of such a heinous act? Of course not. What I am saying though is that these radical anti-government movements are becoming more common and they’re empowering crazy people to believe that such disgusting acts are warranted.
And you can mark my words, if Fox News and the conservative media continues to perpetuate these radical anti-government lunatics as “patriots” or “heroes” (until they go off on racist rants or murder three people) we’re going to see more shootings such as the one we just saw in Nevada. Because they’re actually convincing these people that their lives are worth sacrificing for the “greater good” of the anti-government movement and the “second revolution” many of them believe is coming.
