Former Bush Official Bashes Republicans for Obsessing over Benghazi While Ignoring Cheney’s War Crimes

lawrence-wilkersonIt’s no secret that when it comes to the attack in Benghazi, Republicans have done just about everything they possibly can to keep this “story” in the news.  And time and time again their ridiculous conspiracy theories pertaining to the attacks that happened nearly two years ago have been soundly debunked.  Their most recent push to keep this “story” relevant has been reduced to an email they discovered pertaining to talking points that were used in the days immediately following the attack.

That’s what this recent flare up within the conservative media is all about.  What talking points was Susan Rice given by White House officials just after the attack in Benghazi?.  But to hear Republicans talk about this email, it’s a “smoking gun” to a conspiracy as corrupt or worse than Watergate.

I guess it’s a good thing for Republicans that conservative voters don’t like to think for themselves.  Otherwise they might see how ridiculous it is that nearly two years after this attack, we’re once again discussing it because of the talking points that were used just after it had occurred.

Well, a former Bush administration official and Army Col. Lawrence Wilkerson hammered Republicans for how they obsess over Benghazi while ignoring Dick Cheney’s war crimes.

Wilkerson said, “I find it an enormous problem that they go after something like this, Benghazi – tragedy that it was – and they don’t go after something that is a colossal tragedy like the war crimes of Richard Bruce Cheney.”

He also went on to say, “The fact that I was a member of that administration will haunt me to the grave.”

The point he makes is one I, and many liberals, have been saying for quite a while now.  It’s amazing how furious Republicans want to act about Benghazi, yet they completely ignore the horrors that were committed by the Bush administration.

While there’s no doubt that Benghazi is a tragedy, it pales in comparison to the over 4,000 Americans who died in Iraq based on a lie.  Then we have a former vice president essentially bragging about the war crimes the administration committed, even saying he would do them again.  Hell, in a recent speech Sarah Palin said if she were president she would openly commit war crimes.

And these are some of the people who want to act “alarmed” and “shocked” over the talking points used immediately following the attack in Benghazi?  Give me a break.

Yet I don’t remember him speaking out as it happened. He can stay on the GOP side…decent people can see through his fake hindsight.

      • Jim Bean

Anyone still buying the WH spin on Benghazi is in no position to call ANYONE a lemming.

      • Nick Wride

Anyone buying into the Fox “News” spin on Benghazi is a F’n moron and an easily led sheep.

      • Jim Bean

You’re saying we should stop asking questions and I ask you, “What’s to gain by stopping before they’ve been answered?”

      • Nick Wride

The questions have been answered, many times. Turn off Fox “News” and pay attention.

      • KrSpo

Ok, while you’re at it, why not ask the question about the false Aluminum rods report and three top WH officials lying to the Congress and Public. I mean if we’re wanting facts and all…

      • Jim Bean

        I agree.

      • Scaramongus

I think the issue is you didn’t get the answers you wanted, not that they have not been answered.

Its IS a regime. One of disinformation, cover-ups, and abuse of power.

      • Nick Wride

I guess you must have been really pissed off at the Cheney/Bush REGIME then, right? Or are you just a hypocrite?

      • KrSpo

And that is different from the Reagan/Bush, Bush/Cheney regimes how exactly? I find it odd that for a group wanting truths, the path to it is so short.

      • lindylou

I am in awe of your ability to not understand one fracking thing about the current administration or the past one as well.

See there are a few smart republicans like this former Bush official who must be like most of us Americans sick and tired of hearing how lame the GOP IS. Does the GOP really not know just how STUPID they sound? how childish OR are their VOTERS all really this DUMB? ID vote for DUMB as A ROCK but Id hate to insult the rocks.

    • chiefjgmac

” ID vote for DUMB as A ROCK”. think you already did, twice!!!

      • suburbancuurmudgeon

Dwyer voted for George “DUMB as a ROCK” Bush? Don’t think so.

  • Edward Krebbs

Army Col. Lawrence Wilkerson – I thought the repubs listened to their military ???

My personal guess is that Benghazi is a way to charge up the base for 2014 as well as try to discredit Hillary Clinton. But that being the case, it is fun to watch even the repubs jump ship from holding endless inquiries – such as this article and a recent article where the head of the hearing dismissed the credibility of the repub witness.

And from the conservative mindset, how much govt money have they spent on this in partisan politics. How much unbudgeted money have they spent without budgeting for a way that pays for the meetings? How many drastically needed pieces of legislation have been pushed aside?

What many Republicans are perhaps intentionally missing is that Benghazi is only a result, a blowback, of attacking Libya as were the Islamic invasion of north Mali, the genocide of some sub-Saharan Africans in Libya, and the loss to Al-Queda of some 400 state of the art surface to air missile the US for whatever reason had in Libya. This was because many Republicans like McCain were either silent or supported the President’s executive ordered attack on the government of Libya. I credit Democrats Kucinich and Nader for recognizing that the President could or should be impeached for that action. But why stop there? There were a number of Republicans and Democrats like Hillary and McCain who 1) supported the Bush/Cheney instigated war in Iraq, 2) supported the Obama attack on Libya, and 3) supported the effort to do ‘limited’ bombing of Syria. I’d be ok with Bush and Cheney in jail, and Obama impeached but every politician who supported actions against Iraq, Libya, and Syria should be voted out of office.

GOP = a toddler throwing a tantrum when they don’t get what they want. The louder you are or the more times you repeat the same b.s., the more you look like incompetent fools holding on to the thinnest of threads. And it isn’t just Benghazi, it’s the last 7 years. I’m not a Dem, but I’m more left-leaning than right and the right, while I’m fiscally conservative, has done nothing in the past 15 years to appeal to me in any way, shape or form. Quite the opposite to be honest with the 8-year Bush debacle, Sarah Palin, Fox News, John Boehner, bringing Congress to a stand-still, blathering on and on about the same talking points on Fox, etc. If I had any respect for the GOP it has been lost on incompetent politicians, ridiculous commentators, and the flock of ignorant sheep that follow these morons without questioning anything. Anything at all.

    • Scaramongus

      hear hear

    • vlhamilton

      Well said,

  • Jim Bean

The problem with pursuing the Bush/Cheney war crimes is that they were also Hillary/Reid/Kerry and Biden war crimes and you’re still paying them and want one for President. To single out the two top dogs involved that don’t happen belong to your political persuasion is pretty hypocritical and transparent, don’t you think?

    • KrSpo

I am all for pursuing Bush/Cheney war crimes. If that means some of the people in the party I support get hammered for it too, then good riddance. What the Right doesn’t understand is, most of us on the left or Libertarians don’t care if one of our supported party gets busted. If they’re guilty, then they are guilty. Benghazi was terrible, but is nothing compared to the 5000+ Americans dead in Iraq, all due to the Aluminum Rod lie. It’s funny how you Right wingers never ask, If Bush and his party was so righteous, why did they write in to Law that they can never be held responsible and are blameless even IF their actions are found to be criminal? Hypocrisy abounds.

  • KrSpo

I will listen to Benghazi reports the moment The Republicans initiate a fact finding report on the Iraq war of the early 2000′s and also where all of the money came from that was deposited in Dick’s account.

  • James

Why has the U.S. Military not arrested Cheney and Bush ?

So….Army Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson…why are you talking about War Crimes especially with a Rat like Schultz from the criminal cover uppers of MSNBC….Did you forget that we were attacked here in OUR country?? The way you are attacking GW Bush and Cheney is Un-American as .you should also be attacking the current President….Vice President…SS Hillary Clinton…and…tell the truth….Obama…Joe… and… Hillary the Beast are also guilty of war crimes….they continued the wars for the last 7 years and have/did killed innocent people in foreign countries with Drones…Where have you been Sir.?? Mars.??…NO ONE died during the Waterboarding of 3 criminals during Bush and Cheney’s time at the White House…..but….Four Patriots died at the hands of Obama and Hillary…BTW…. and regrettably… .most of the dead soldiers just happened to be under the Obama ‘s wars…

This is the dumbest article I have seen recently. Based on false premises. But I guess it was written by a non thinker for non-thinkers.

Who wants to bet most of the RWNJ types who are constantly harping on Benghazi couldn’t even find it on a map?
