6 Myths About Welfare Recipients Debunked

ebt-food-stampDespite food stamps and other assistance programs being a relatively small part of the federal budget, a lot of conservatives like to point to these programs (and the people on them) as a prime example of waste and fraud. Now mind you, these are the same politicians who got upset over the President bringing home the only remaining POW of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, who wanted us to remain in Iraq even longer, or continuing to fund the way-over-budget F-35 fighter jet development project. Oh yes, and of course they also wanted us to use military force in Syria and now, the Ukraine.

We could talk about how these politicians and the military-industrial complex they’re beholden to are hypocrites for complaining about a public assistance system with low rates of fraud, yet defend wasteful spending, corporate welfare and the constant calls for more war. We could also go on about how despite their assertions that military spending creates jobs, so does public assistance spending – but that’s not what we’ll discuss today. Instead, let’s look at 6 popular myths used by some conservatives and libertarians to demonize welfare recipients.

6. Illegal immigrants receive food stamps: Completely and utterly false. If you’re an undocumented immigrant, you do not qualify for food stamps, plain and simple. If you are a documented immigrant, you still have to wait 5 years before you qualify. This is a talking point brought up over and over again by many uninformed conservatives, and it is false according to the SNAP website:

Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for SNAP. Additionally, there is already a strict waiting period for documented immigrants. Documented adult immigrants (those with a greencard) are subject to a five-year waiting period before they are eligible for SNAP.

5. The “Obamaphone”: How many memes have you seen on the Internet like “I wish I could afford an Obama iPhone and an Escalade like the person in front of me in the checkout line who is paying for her groceries with food stamps”? Getting past the obvious racial dogwhistle (you know, because only black people drive Cadillac Escalades), has it ever occurred to these people that Lifeline does not support smartphones? You’re getting a basic phone with a finite number of minutes and text messages to use monthly. If you’re a welfare recipient and you have a nice phone, it’s not from the government. End of story.

4. The Welfare Queen: Again, this is a not-so-subtle racial card played repeatedly to convince poor whites who receive government assistance to vote against their own best interests. It paints a stereotypical image of a single, black woman with multiple children, an iPhone, and an EBT card loading up the back of an Escalade with fancy cuts of meat and cases of soda – allegedly purchased on your hard-earned tax dollars. The fact is that when you break down welfare statistics, the number of whites versus blacks who receive public assistance is almost equal:

The margin between Caucasians and African-Americans who are on welfare is extremely narrow — 38.8 percent of Caucasians, and 39.8 percent of African-Americans are on welfare. (Source)

3. Obama is the “food-stamp President”: A favorite tactic of some conservatives is to claim that the welfare rolls are the highest they’ve ever been under the Obama administration. While true according to Politifact.com, it’s a trend that started before he took office due to a combination of the recession, the fact that corporations continue to avoid hiring despite record profits, and that the minimum wage hasn’t kept up to the rate of inflation. In other words, it’s a cheap, easy accusation that flies well with those who hated the guy to begin with – and have no idea how the economy works.

2. Only lazy people get welfare: A common retort from those who like to demonize those who receive public assistance is “if you just worked harder, you wouldn’t need welfare! Stop being lazy and get to work!” Almost $104 million dollars worth of food stamps were used at military commissaries in 2013. These are some of the hardest working people in the United States, and they still need food stamps to get by. In addition, nearly 1 million veterans receive food stamps as well. While there are certainly some who spend a lifetime on public assistance, they are the exception, not the rule – and honestly, I can’t see that as being a happy way to live.

1. Welfare is too expensive: The average SNAP benefit is slightly less than $134 per person monthly and if you are an able-bodied adult, you only get to be on it for 3 months.

SNAP already has strict time-limits for unemployed workers. Able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) may only receive 3 months of SNAP benefits during any 3 year period, unless they are working in a qualifying job training program.
The SNAP benefit formula is structured to provide a strong work incentive – for every additional dollar a SNAP participant earns, their benefits decline by about 24 to 36 cents, not a full dollar, so participants have a strong incentive to find work, work longer hours, or seek better-paying employment. (Source)

To summarize, welfare recipients are a favorite target for many GOP and far-right politicians. Over the years since Reagan painted the racial stereotype of the Welfare Queen, they’ve used this repeatedly to convince far too many voters that if you’re poor, you deserve it because you’re lazy, or a minority. Let’s consider the fact that the poorest county in the United States is 98.5 white and more than half of the residents are welfare recipients. People aren’t on public assistance because it’s a cushy way to live or because they’re lazy, it’s because more and more jobs are paying less or being eliminated due to either automation or outsourcing. If we are going to place the blame for the increasing need for public assistance on anyone, let us place it where it rightfully belongs. It isn’t on welfare recipients, but it is firmly on the corporations who rely on low wages and public subsidies – and the politicians they have in their pockets.

One I hear over and over also is people saying things like “I’m tired of working my butt off only to know these people are buying Beer and Pizza Hut pizza and I can’t even afford it” O.k. lets get this straight once and for all NEVER EVER EVER HAVE YOU BEEN Able to by beer (or other alcohol) on food stamps. You cannot I repeat CANNOT buy precooked foods on food stamps (such as fast food places) the ONLY possible misconception MIGHT be Papa Murphys which is a WE MAKE IT YOU BAKE IT place as it is NOT precooked no difference then going to the grocery store and buying a packaged Pizza taking it home and cooking it.

    • Mr. Nobody

      Actually…

EBT has 2 different parts. There’s EBT Cash and EBT Food.

EBT Cash you can spend on whatever you want, given the store accepts EBT. Beer, cigarettes, gasoline… Whatever.

EBT Food is exactly what it is. Just for food. However you can buy premade items. It just can’t be hot food. Smoothies, iced coffee, cold cut subs… All things you can buy with EBT Food.

Only reason I know is I work at a convenience store. When someone spends their EBT money on candy, snacks, and other high priced food people are more upset that the money isn’t being spent wisely. One thing in my opinion is the government forgot to include a class on money budgeting. Could be a person doesn’t make enough money… Or could be that they don’t manage their money.

Or it could be that we live in a society of wants vs needs…

      • djtejas

If a retailer accepts EBT for things they shouldn’t, then should we blame the person using the card or the retailer? Isn’t it the retailer’s greed that causes them to accept a card for something they shouldn’t?…not the user….

      • Chris

        Now you are reaching.
There should be blame on bothsides people should understand that they are being helped (and I have no probablem with helping people) but they need to respect the fact that they are being helped and not buy things they aren’t supposed to just because the store clerk didn’t notice it.

      • Beth Rose-Acor

Just a few short posts ago, a man told of a story how the cashier told him what cheese he could buy with what was assumed to be an EBT card. Every post after said the cashier had no business telling the EBT holder what they could buy and what type. Now you bring up this question. Image if you will how the cashier would handle the situation and how unglued the EBT user would become. If the card is used to improperly purchase items, the user is the one who is failing his fellow taxpayer not the retailer.

      • djtejas

the retailer should have a responsibility to not sell items that should not be sold on EBT cards…I don’t believe the “type” of cheese would fall into that category, but I don’t know for sure.
So how about the Walmart debacle where they knew the EBT card system was down, but they kept letting people charge more and more on the cards without knowing the balance. People were buying carts and carts of stuff, much of it items that should not be purchased with an EBT card. But Wamart continued to do so, hoping they would make lots of money from a glitch in the system.
Again, I stand by my comments that a retailer should be responsible for only selling items that are allowed on an EBT card, I have seen many retailers deny items and I agree with it completely. A retailer that blindly allows anything to be purchased on an EBT card is just as guilty as the card user.

      • Joi Owen

You are overlooking the fact that many states collect child support from the sperm donor and only make it available to the mother as an EBT Cash account. That money is hers to do with as she wishes, and if she wants to buy a bag of candy, that is none of your concern. That’s not even taxpayer-funded, money, and you’re judging her for how she spends it?!

  • Sandy Greer

The single largest dichotomy I see between Right and Left today is the ‘begrudging’:

Got a problem? Lefties ask how can they help.

While The Right sees a hand up as a hand out – with every hand reaching into their pocket like it was their last dollar they’ve got a death grip on.

Especially for those of us who believe we’ll face God someday – we shouldn’t want ‘begrudging’ others on our consciences.

    • FD Brian

There you go Sandy, you know nobody on the left believes in God. (that’s sarcasm btw). well put.

      • TRussert

And how many on the Right THINK they’re God!
It blows my mind how the religious conservative right can be so anti Christian in words and deeds, and are completely blind to the fact!

      • FD Brian

as long as they go to church on Sunday they are forgiven.

      • KG

you are quick to judge I see, I am a liberal, believe in god and feel its not my place to judge anyone

      • dlws8607

Oh come on people. At least FD noted that FD was using sarcasm instead of making a statement and then coming back later to say it was sarcasm.

      • donnie

I am about as far left one can get and I believe in God.

    • TRussert

God will not be mocked, for as a man sows, so does he reap.

      • Threenotch

I get the feeling you are trying to make a point. You have failed miserably. Want to try again?

      • Di Kelley

Meaning, threenotch that these people who claim to be christian and yet fly in the face of the very charity Christ espoused will be judged in their time.

    • steve

The biggest difference I see is many lefties will give you someone else’s money. Many people on the right will help with their own money.

      • Sandy Greer

If by someone else’s money you mean taxes – You’re right. Lefties don’t mind taxes going to help the poor so much as those on The Right do.

You could be right that conservatives give more to charity (churches) than do Lefties. Not worth arguing over, really.

But charities are overwhelmed right now. With so many out of work and needing help – charities just can’t keep up with demand. Go begging for funds, and resources, and volunteers.

Even in good times, charities can’t do it all. There is nothing wrong with a government helping its people.

      • dlws8607

And giving to a church is often a horribly inefficient way to help people. Many of the churches I see now are palaces. They spend far more money on the buildings than on the programs to help people.

      • asdfsdf

Church is not a charity. Most of their money goes to paying salaries and other costs. Very very very little goes to any sort of charity unless you count a sermon as charity… it isnt.

      • Jennifer Lynch

People are laying out facts and you contribute nothin to this conversation. This is a story to counteract the myths and you come up with another stupid straw man fact. Whan I donate to charity whos money do you think I use? This just proves how uninformed the right is. I bet there will be n response because theirs no smart answer for this one.

      • steve

Jennifer, I can easily answer your question but this it is difficult in one post. Forgive me if this jumps around. You may give very generously from your pocket as do many on the left. It’s not an all left or all right are this or that. But there are demographics and tendencies involved. Democrats pander to the poor for votes. Many Republicans tend to pander more to the business world. Many Democrats offer the poor OPM Other Peoples Money. That’s not straw man that steel reinforced concrete. The Democrats solution to most problems is throw money at it. But this does not always work. Take raising the minimum wage. The idea has some merits but look at the ridiculous $15.00. Are you going to pay anyone $15.00 to flip burgers? Can the small local business that is barely making it pay this much? Yes Wal-Mart and McDonalds can survive but someone will have to loose their job for others to make $15.00. Again OPM but not well thought through. Take Free Health Care for the poor. Again a noble idea nobody wants someone to die for lack of proper healthcare. But this has been very poorly handled and partially paid for with lies to the middle class. We have not even begun to see the fall out from this fiasco. The offer is I will give you what someone else worked for and you will have to do much less to get it. I believe in helping and we all have to help and do our share. But cut the waste fraud and abuse and we can do far more with what we have. We are more on the same side than you think but we have to stop fighting about ideas that can’t work and get together on ideas that do work.

      • asdfsdf

Raising the minimum wage is not a form of charity… it is meant to counteract cost of living increases that are not addressed by capitalism. Capitalism, is not a perfect system and it needs help sometimes. That said,I personally dont agree with minimum wage increases. I think what should happen is all corporations should by law, give 5% of their net income to (non management/executive) workers and that executives should never be paid anything when a company loses money. Also, executives who are not founders (founders earned it as long as it was not through regulation or with government assistance), should not be allowed a salary over 10x the lowest paid member of their corporation.

      • kim dyer

Baloney. The “right wing” will only “donate” when it benefits THEM personally. Like the Walton who “donated” a museum to house her personal art collection. Like the Romneys who “loan” their expensive horse to the USOC so they can take a tax break.

      • steve

All day everyday any day the donations made by the right exceed those by the left. Not just rich people on either side but the average person. Lets take the Romey spin. Quick common sense. A rich as they do you think. They lend out an expensive animal j just for the write off? Or is it something they would have doe anyway that happens to be a write off. I don’t know theRmostat and I’m no particular supporter b out t I believe the guy paid 3 million in taxes and gave away millions sounds like he’s contributing how about you?

      • Joi Owen

You’re counting the billions of money tithed to churches, aren’t you? How much have you, personally, given to charity? Have you ever opened your own wallet to help a stranded traveler? I have. Multiple times. What’s your story?

      • steve

Tithe an Church budget offerings don’t always count for the purpose of this discussion. However some do. But to answer your question no I did not count tithe and yes I have opened my own wallet. I seldom pass someone wit a sign in need that I don’t give. At that moment I don’t second guess them. And my original statement still holds true. The right outgives the left any day. Real people out of pocket serving person to person. If you get organizations like Church it’s not even a discussion. Fr all the faults and there are many church’s still do huge amounts of good for the poor and needy world wide.

      • KG

source that please would like to see that thanks

      • asdfsdf

Oh please, conservatives are tightwads and church is not a charity. They have never been a charity. They are a business.

      • KG

who is “anyones” money? beyond popular believe “lefties” also may taxes and we would prefer it to be used on the American people vs corporations, as you know congress just passed a 270 BILLION dollar tax break for corporations while shooting down other things, yea I dont like that they pay literally no taxes at times , while WE THE PEOPLE ARE PAYING

      • KG

        *PAY not may

      • dlws8607

steve, every liberal I know has a high paying job, which means they pay quit a bit in taxes. As a result, when they vote to increase taxes (indirectly based on who they vote for), they are voting to increase taxes on themselves. Every CONservative I know has a lower paying job, in large part because they were so against education that they never pursued a college degree.

      • asdfsdf

this is the irony of it isnt it? That said, there are plenty of conservatives who made a killing by swindling people including tax payers. $60b per year for oil subsidies? you know all those jobs they are proud for creating? All on the backs of tax payers. Defense contracting? All conservatives and none of their money earned. Banking? All conservatives who are usually religious and think usury is wrong lol.

  • R Vogel

But, but, but…everyone has a completely true and universal anecdote about someone they saw ‘abusing the system’ It usually involves making some sort of completely uninformed judgment about what someone ahead or behind them in the grocery store is buying, but no matter, it still counts!!

    • FD Brian

I’d love to live in a world where people realize there are exceptions to every thing and those exceptions aren’t the rule. For instance, I know people who say, my granddad smoked 2 packs a day and lived until he was 90, cigarettes don’t cause cancer, that’s the exception. Rich people are the ones who cheat on their taxes and then turn around and call the poor mooches.

      • steve

People cheat on taxes some rich some poor you sound as bad as the people you attack.

      • FD Brian

I think you missed the point and it had nothing to do with cheating on taxes. read it again and think about it.

      • Sandy Greer

I like you, FD Brian. Just saying.

      • FD Brian

        teach a man to fish…..

      • jebai00

….And he’ll sit in a boat and drink beer every weekend. Just kidding, I agree we need to have valid job training and support of small business development.

      • Helen R. Robare

Unfortunately the way we are treating our water sources…the fish we catch aren’t fit to eat! So teaching a man to fish will not always guarantee him/her food or a decent living.

      • steve

        FD Brian
Your point was simple and easily understood. I actually agree with what you are saying. I only commented on how a portion was presented. Read through these comments the are full of lame generalizations like the right is all rich, hypocrites that don’t want to help people. The way that portion was worded sounded like the same so I commented. I think if we stay away from the far left and far right talking points regular people could come up with realistic solutions.

    • Dumb Arkie

My mother in law had a lady working for her for in home care. I noticed she had 3 cell phones. I asked her why she had 3 phones and she let me know that her free phone did not have enough minutes so she had to get two more. From my understanding all you need to get a phone is to provide your SSAN but I guess there is no follow up.

      • R Vogel

        Is this a Poe?

      • Arie

There is plenty of follow up. I have a safe link cell phone.

I contacted a different life line provider that had more minutes per month and they said I couldn’t even apply since I already had a life line phone. I’m sure that woman with the three phones had them under three different names.

You have to be getting SNAP, SSI, SSDI, Medicaid etc in order to qualify. You can apply if you’re low income only but that is really hard.

    • Donald Black

what i hate is how people judge others for using ebt when these same republicans getting those haters to hate go out get free cars, meals, and houses from our tax dollars then turn around and complain about food stamps. we need to kick those politicians out of office.

  • Ellen H.

One time I was paying for groceries with a Visa I’d gotten as a rebate from a tire company. I was dressed nicely because I was on my way home from work. Since my card was “different” this woman behind me said loudly enough for me to hear that “it must be nice to have everything paid for”. Needless to say, I turned around and let her know exactly what I thought of her.

    • Maike Hudson

One day I was trying to buy some nice imported cheese to celebrate pay day when the checker told me I couldn’t buy that kind of cheese with my card. At first I didn’t understand and told her that my account balance certainly covered the $6 cheese. She replied, “That’s not the point. You’re not allowed to buy luxury items with that card. You need to get some cheese that’s approved.”

Finally it dawned on me: my credit union debit card strongly resembled an EBT card. When the checker realized her mistake, she apologized profusely. I was pissed though. All of a sudden I was a person worthy of her respect because I wasn’t on food stamps. That’s just wrong.

      • odell

and I would’ve left my groceries there and shopped elsewhere. that’s just me.

      • Stephen Barlow

I would rip the manager a new one and make sure his District manager got it up the wahzoo in writing. There is no shame in being legally eligible for what My 40 years of tax paying funds.

      • kid_you_not

It is as “legal” as segregation you guys whine endlessly about. Well, we are going to END this unjust and “legalized” theft once and for all by ending these gimme programs.

      • rossbro

And how about us poor, white retirees getting some food stamp help? You are some jerkoff, kid.

      • DaveHolden

You better help fight the fraud or you will suffer along with the rest.

      • Helen R. Robare

Well then I hope you are prepared to support your aged parents and grandparents in your home when they can no longer care for themselves! Without these programs you kids are going to be caring for your aged relatives…food, a place to live, rides to the doctors and other appointments, clothing etc. Wishing you luck kid. Come back in 20 years and tell us if you have the same mind set!

      • steve

Her mistake was wrong but assume you had food stamps should she let it go?

      • moonkat51

It’s not up to her, she doesn’t make the determination, the card takes care of it.

      • Julie Wickstrom

It’s not their business. I was a cashier at 18. You have to be respectable and not make comments unless you want complaints.

      • Stephen Barlow

It NEVER pays to be snotty to people. Except Republicans who lie in blogs about our Half White President. LOL But that is just “fishing in a barrel with a shotgun” sport.

      • So Wale

All cheese is approved, she was simply shaming what she thought was a poor person plain and simple

      • Stephen Barlow

She would have had too. But a little educational screaming from a grumpy and overworked grocery manager who was about to get an ass chewing from HIS boss might ‘wise her up’.

      • moonkat51

If that were true, which it’s not, the EBT card would not have accepted it. There is no distinction between what cheeses you buy. That clerk was way off and had no right making any comment at all. She would’ve been fired right away if it had been me she spoke to like that.

      • Stephen Barlow

Fired no, reprimanded yes. We don’t want to CREATE SNAP recipients and hungry children in a fit of rage.

      • kid_you_not

I think I will reprimand the managers for accepting SNAP. Why should I have to pay double for things and wait in lines? Time for this to end. If you want government food programs have separate places for them to go – that will cut out the rampant fraud.

      • Kris Zediker

If you’re a productive tax payer…i’ll eat my hat

      • I’m just curious about what you are implying when you say “productive tax payer.” Do you mean working? I am wondering because I work 70 hours a week at two management jobs and am on food stamps. No, there is no fraud occurring, so don’t try that. Now… eat your hat.

      • Mom&Student

Yes, I am a student and also work. I am on foodstamps also. Heaven forbid. People are so ignorant about SNAP recipients. We’re all judged because of the few losers who want to abuse the system. People need to realize that’s not a typical thing and most SNAP recipient adults work, or have worked, and more than paid in their own tax dollars!

      • kid_you_not

That is because the story is made up like most of the fables made up by progressives (you guys get caught in your lies left and right – so funny.)

      • Bruce Alan Wilson

        Cite, please.

      • Larry Ham

No, that’s just right. And you know full well that people use EBT cards to buy booze, cigs, porn, tattoos, vacations, and luxury food items.

Get off your high horse you left wing elitist.

      • sherry06053

You ignorant idiot – those kind of purchases are NOT accepted by an EBT card. Get informed, you right wing moron.

      • Larry Ham

You’re the uninformed moron, just google “EBT fraud” to get thousands of examples of people using them for booze, cigarettes, tattoos, cruise ships, etc. The ones in my state of MA have been used in Orlando, Las Vegas, Bermuda, etc.
And when we tried to stop that they started selling their cards for cash to make it easier to buy drugs; our state Auditor just found out we have over 30,000 EBT cards that are “missing” and we know full well what’s happening.
Learn the truth and maybe you won’t go thru the rest of your life as an angry, ignorant moonbat.

      • Stephen Barlow

You can use them in any American state or territory. Yu are LYING about Bermuda you racist waste of sperm.

      • Larry Ham

You’re the deluded, brainwashed imbecile, cards from MA are used at Disneyworld and LasVegas casinos. Deny it all you want but these welfare queens are clearly visible to all, you just have to choose to believe what you see or not.

Keep living in dream land useless moonbat.

      • Stephen Barlow

        To buy food legally.

      • Larry Ham

Really? They went from MA to FL to buy food? Keep deluding yourself, we know with absolute certainty that they’re selling cards for cash, at a fraction of their value, so they can buy drugs.

People are caught with MULTIPLE cards from different people: how do you explain that???

Not everyone who has an EBT card is a criminal, but every criminal has EBT cards.

      • Stephen Barlow

Do you have any living relatives that you visit for holidays?

How often are people ACTUALLY caught with multiple cards?

“In fact, the black market accounts for just over 1 percent of the total food stamp program, which is far less than fraud in other government programs like Medicare and Medicaid.”

“The bigger issue, he said, is why poor people are being targeted at all.

“They make a bigger deal of people trying to sell $200 worth of food stamps than they do over a banker who steals $10 million,” he said. “You come out here and look around and then tell me you’re going to sweat someone for that. People here got nothing.”

WOW you are a sick fuc*. Every criminal has an EBT card? LMAO!!!

        We’re done.

      • Larry Ham

Yes, just about every street thug criminal has EBT cards…usually several of them and usually issued to someone else.

I’m in Boston, those terrorists that bombed us on Marathon day had EBT cards, and a full slate of welfare benefits. Auntie Zeituni, the PRESIDENT’S aunt, had EBT cards plus “free” clothes, housing, health care, food stamps, etc. And this after she was deported – TWICE!

Don’t take my word for it, google it yourself.

And yes, we are done, with record numbers of people living off government hand outs we most certainly are done.

      • Stephen Barlow

So THAT’S what “stop and frisk” was all about. that 99% who abuse EBT cards!!!

        You are a celibate idiot.

Those kids weren’t actual “Terrorists.” Not part of a Jihad or Al Guido or whatever. Just nutballs like you, wanting 15 minutes of fame in their useless, worthless lives.

I hear the sister made bomb/death threats and was arrested today.

WHERE do you get “Free clothes” except with a Salvation Army / Red Cross voucher or from a church ‘clothes closet’?

Nice to know you are a BREITFART ASSICT. Addict.

What do you do for a living besides BOT on Progressive blogs to annoy real people? How much do you make annually?

Do you pay taxes @ all?

      • Larry Ham

        A quick google search shows:

“The Tsarnaev family, including the suspected terrorists and their parents, benefited from more than $100,000 in taxpayer-funded assistance — a bonanza ranging from cash and food stamps to Section 8 housing from 2002 to 2012, the Herald has learned.

“The breadth of the benefits the family was receiving was stunning,” said a person with knowledge of documents handed over to a legislative committee today.”

And I run a successful business as a painting contractor, employ up to a dozen people, and pay more taxes in a year than you will in ten years.

      • Stephen Barlow

        And your POINT IS?

      • Larry Ham

My point was showing how wrong you are. You simply refuse to believe we give welfare benefits to illegals and you’re simply wrong.

You sound like some entitled little puke who never worked a day in his life, I should’ve guessed you were some little house husband who sits at home collecting money his daddy earned.

And didn’t your fat ugly hero George Soros make his billions in the same way?

I guess I’m the “greedy” rich guy who made money with a small business and rental real estate.

I’m as pissed at that as you are. So what did your messiah in the white house do about that? Oh yes, he made the CEO from GE (Immelt) his “Jobs Czar” and the first thing the guy does is shuts down a factory in the US to move it overseas.

Oh, and with a Dem congress he let GE keep those tax loopholes you’re whining about…I guess you CAN fool some of the people all of the time.

Anyone who says “Google it” to prove something is really not thinking very clearly. You can Google anything and find both true and false information. Why would you even use that phrase? Haven’t you ever Googled? It isn’t going to bolster your side of the argument if someone else is doing the googling.

      • Mom&Student

Umm I don’t know anyone living on foodstamps that has money to travel (unless they hitch or panhandle). And the cards will only work in the state they’re issued in.

      • Stephen Barlow

        !!

      • Cemetery Girl

I seriously doubt Disney is set up to take EBT, and Vegas casinos take Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. The SNAP EBT is it’s own card form requiring the processing ability to accept it. It is no different than stating that because a business accepts one credit card (like Visa) they are also able to accept American Express. If they don’t have the ability to process the payment then they do not have the ability to accept that payment. Just because someone can slide/insert a card somewhere doesn’t mean that every card made will work in it. That’s as logical as believing that casinos also take the Victoria Secret card…

      • GodSchilD

If you haven’t used an ebt card you don’t know sh*t.

You just repeat what you hear like a retarded bird. People on welfare are allowedto relocate.wwhat’s your point there?

Most everything else you named is not allowed. Complain about the real money wasters…the same people who have the wool pulled over your eyes.

      • Larry Ham

Again, just google “EBT fraud” to get actual examples. I know they’re not “allowed” to use cards at strip joints or to buy drugs but they sell their cards for cash to buy drugs then they report the card stolen. Our Auditor, who is a liberal Democrat, found we have over 30,000 missing EBT cards. WTF do you think happened to them???

Are you so delusional that you don’t think this ever happens? Just google it, don’t take my word for it.

      • Stephen Barlow

Out of 47.9 million EBT cardholders. Let’s see:

        30,000 divided by 47,900,000 = ZERO .000626304 %

WHAT a HUGE frigging CRIME WAVE!!!

30,000 x $133 = $3,990000 That is a shame, but if you are so scrupulously honest and concerned about Government fraud… HOW much did Halliburton make on the Iraq War INVENTED by Dick Cheney, Halliburton CEO?

“Private or publicly listed firms received at least $138 billion of U.S. taxpayer money for NO BID government contracts for services that included providing private security, building infrastructure and feeding the troops.

“Cheney’s Halliburton Made $39.5 Billion on Iraq War”

HOw much of that actually feed the troops?

“The company was given $39.5 billion in Iraq-related contracts over the past decade, with many of the deals given without any bidding from competing firms, such as a $568-million contract renewal in 2010 to provide housing, meals, water and bathroom services to soldiers, a deal that led to a Justice Department lawsuit over alleged kickbacks, as reported by Bloomberg.”

Why don’t you try looking at the people you voted for if you are so offended by corruption?

      • Wukfad

Yeah because everything “on google” is the absolute truth.

You keep talking about “fraud”, Yes, this needs to stop. Cutting benefits to those that have not committed fraud is just wrong. And that’s what you conservative solution to fraud seems to be. Punish the vast majority of those in need to punish the few criminals.

      • Cemetery Girl

Anyone that purchases a card for cash wouldn’t be very bright. Even if they go online and verify the amount, cards can be reported lost or stolen 24/7. It could be reported missing immediately after selling it, making it worthless. Once reported, the account is unusable until a new card is issued and activated.
How do 30,000 cards get reported missing? How many bank debit cards get reported missing in any state? People drop cards, forget them in stores, can’t find them and report them missing and later find them. Work in a store and see how many times people accidentally leave their debit and credit cards. We would begin the process of tracking them down at the end of the day (because some people realize and come back that day) and at least 1/4 of the people would say to throw the card out because they’d already reported it missing and ordered a new card. People leave stuff behind and lose it. It happens. Any given day at a grocery store you probably have at least one person forget a card, it happens a lot. We once had a man forget his car keys, so we set them aside figuring he was bound to be back soon because you’re going to realize pretty quick that you’ve lost those. Two days later he comes in asking if anyone turned in car keys. (How he managed to get home that first day we couldn’t figure out because it was an area with no public transportation system.) Canes are probably left behind in grocery stores almost as much as cards. They’re put in the cart and then aren’t grabbed when they go to get in the car (yet they’re rarely retrieved!)

      • Bernadette Rollins Harrison

Because everything you “Google” had to be a fact of it came up in your search, right? Idiot. Get the facts before you open your mouth. You sound like a moron.

      • Dawn Hilton Oliveira

Yes there is fraud out there, but the numbers still do not amount of the money spent on wasteful military spending. Do your research! Not saying in any way that it is right, but you would think that being on welfare would not be something to be proud of. I am sure many of those people are depressed and we all know substance abuse and depression go hand in hand. We need more programs to get people trained for positions that are in demand and pay a livable wage. We should also give employers incentives to hire these people. We need to stop kicking people when they are down, we need to lift them up.

      • Stephen Barlow

ZERO POINT ZERO ZERO ZERO SIX TWO SIX THREE ZERO FOUR PERCENT.

6/10,0000ths of a percent. compared to 5-9% fraud in the Afghan War by contractors or 103 million to 185.4 Million.

Isn’t this guy a putz for Hunting snails with an elephant gun while pretending he shoots whales with a BB gun?

      • buricco

But kicking people when they’re down is the American way! *SNORT*

      • Syncerez Evangelista

stop kicking people when they are down??? half the people don’t even bother trying to get up… why help someone when they make no effort themselvez to do so???

      • jayjay4142

Just where di you get that half statistic from ? Fake News? I work with the homeless and there are those that just cannot seem to get ahead.. Many of them have a past felony on their record or no HS diploma or older people who worked their entire lives and their job was closed and companies do not want to hire them due to their age. Yes, there is always some corruption in thongs . However the biggest corruption we have is tat we spend over $500.00 welfare subsidies on corporations and $45.00 a taxpayer on welfare. You people are pissed off at the wrong people.

      • Mom&Student

Oh because they receive benefits, they’re not helping themselves? I work and I’m a student. I’m on SNAP. So are my children, and my uncle who is a veteran and did more than you will ever do. Why do all ignorant people think people on assistance are white trash? Grow up!

      • kid_you_not

Why are progressives so feeble-minded. How does fraud in another program justify fraud in this?

Google it yourself Betty, I dare you to google “EBT fraud” and see the millions of incidents.

I live in South Boston and merely have to walk down the street to a housing project, FULL of illegals. Meanwhile we have war veterans sleeping on park benches. This is in the most liberal, sorry, “progressive,” place in America.

Shameful. And you’re pretending it isn’t happening.

      • Wukfad

Let’s Look at the Facts about SNAP Fraud

The trafficking rate in SNAP has dropped dramatically. Due to increased oversight and improvements to program management by USDA, the trafficking rate has fallen significantly over the last two decades, from about 4 cents on the dollar in 1993 to about 1 cent in 2006-08 (most recent data available).

The federal government is aggressively fighting SNAP trafficking.

USDA and the Obama administration are actively working on behalf of American taxpayers to protect the federal investment in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and make sure the program is targeted towards those families who need it the most. USDA aggressively acts to control trafficking by using SNAP purchase data to identify suspicious transaction patterns, conducting undercover investigations, and collaborating with other investigative agencies.

USDA uses the latest in available technology to track and control abuse of the SNAP.

SNAP electronic benefits transfer (EBT) has given USDA new tools to identify, track, and take action against trafficking. We use the electronic “audit trail” from EBT transactions to identify trafficking and other suspicious activity. The Anti-Fraud Locator using EBT Retailer Transactions (ALERT) system monitors electronic transaction activity and identifies suspicious stores for analysis and investigation.

USDA dedicates staff to investigating and prosecuting fraud

FNS has a dedicated team of over 100 analysts and investigators across the country dedicated to SNAP retailer compliance. They analyze retailer data, conduct undercover investigations, and process cases – including fines and administrative disqualifications – against violating retailers. FNS also works with State law enforcement authorities to provide them with SNAP benefits that are used in sting operations, supporting anti-trafficking actions at the local level.

The federal government takes action against those who misuse the program.

In FY 2012, over 100 analysts and investigators reviewed over 15,000 stores and conducted nearly 4,500 undercover investigations. Close to 1,400 stores were permanently disqualified for trafficking and nearly 700 stores were sanctioned for other violations such as the sale of ineligible items. FNS also works with State law enforcement authorities to provide them with SNAP benefits that are used in sting operations, supporting anti-trafficking actions at the local level. USDA’s Office of the Inspector General also conducts extensive criminal investigations – many resulting from FNS administrative oversight findings and referrals – to prosecute traffickers. In FY 2012, OIG SNAP investigations resulted in 342 convictions, including a number of multi-year prison terms for the most serious offenses, and approximately $57.7 million in monetary results. In FY 2012, OIG devoted more than 50 percent of its investigative resources to prevent SNAP fraud, waste and abuse.

You are an absolute idiot if you believe that SNAP can be used to help pay for a cruise. It is a very specific form of payment that isn’t accepted everywhere. (Kind of like how a business will have signs up showing that they accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, ect.) The only explanation for how cruise lines and travel agents to be willing to commit the kind of fraud you attribute to drug dealers, exchanging the EBT card for the cruise (which is unlikely). Even drug dealers exchanging product for a card isn’t highly likely because there is no guarantee of how much is available on the card and that it won’t be replaced before the account is reloaded (making the card worthless.) It is a gamble on their part. Exchanging food stamps for drugs was a bigger problem under the old system of actual paper slips from a book that acted as a form of money. With those there was no name associated with the stamps (unlike the cards now that have a user name stamped into the card and can be subject to identity check just like a credit card, but almost never happens since a PIN is required and use of the PIN can’t be circumvented), and even once we were required to only accept stamps above a $1 value if we witnessed them removed from the book a full book could be exchanged for drugs and there was no system of prevention.

      • belajadevotchka2

What is going on is cash welfare benefits are also accessed with the same EBT card (if the recipient receives cash welfare benefits or TANF) EBT cards be used at any ATM machine to access the cash benefits- They don’t mail welfare checks anymore, both accounts are on the same card. What I think people are referring to and are upset about is the studay that showed many EBT cards are being used at ATMs in strip clubs, cruise ships, casinos, etc – you’re on welfare but you can afford to go on a cruise/see strippers/gamble???
My profession requires mee to know a lot about this and from the many comments I have read here, both liberal and conservative alike are very misinformed about the welfare statistics and facts.

      • Devon Nuckles

While EBT fraud is indeed a real thing, it is only as high as three precent. Compared to all other forms of fraud, including tax fraud, embezzlement, etc. three precent is nothing. If you are still against any form of government assistance, that’s fine. And you are well within your right to be. However, I challenge you to put your money where your mouth is, so to speak. When you file your taxes, don’t op for any tax breaks or refunds. Not a single dime. Because fair is fair, and if one group of people don’t get cut a break from the government, then no one should. Deal?

      • Anita Brokaw

If that many cards are missing than rhat would mean someone within that department is responsible if not the entire department. So demonizing thos who are rightfully using their benefits. Bit no one says anything about Ststes using those same funds to balance their budgets. Yet want to continue to cut in to federal funds intended for social programs. Stop including participants of federal programs with the fraud and abuse within an agency. Its false and misleading to report as though participants are responsible for agency reporting. So when are States gonna replace the funds used during recession. Those funds need to go back into the social services from which they came. Thos is a terrible excuse for agency’s to falsify participants records and files in an attempt.to mislead and misrepresent information that creates illusions that participants are miss using their benifits. However, the notion that EBT card were in fact created to help participants manage rheir funding and helping to assist them with street crimes and theft. At least thats the impression. However,it was a disaster and made it literally impossible for.participants to function in the manner that was consistent with the the normal economy the amount of fraud and abuse of this system is astonishing.

      • Jennifer Tarin

actually, they can be purchased by an EBT card, but not with food stamps. If you are also receiving cash benefits (TANF) you can purchase things like toilet paper, pay your rent, lights, phone, etc. Yes, there is fraud-many people sell their food stamps to get cash to buy shampoo and other necessary items that they can’t otherwise get.

      • Brian

Depends on what gas station you go to. Do you have any idea how the hood works, dumbass?

      • Stephen Barlow

YOu are liar and you KNOW you are a LYING.

How exactly do they HACK the computer, standing in line without a keyboard? Smart phones aren’t that smart.

      • Larry Ham

You don’t have to hack any computer, you just have to sell your EBT card for cash and then report it stolen. Are you really that naive?

      • Stephen Barlow

Then the money on it is BLOCKED and reinstalled on your new card. Are you proud of being an EXPERT WELFARE THIEF?

Most of the fraud before cards was selling the stamps.

      • Betty J Rousey

You certainly do know how to game the system… so that publication you’re reading all your false info from is also TEACHING you how to defraud us. The defense industry defrauds us in the trillions, and you are worried about thousands. Yep, no sense of degrees here, you are a Con.

      • Larry Ham

Couldn’t agree with you more, defense industry is most assuredly raping us…and every member of the MA delegation is made up of left wing lawyers and they vote to continue the raping. We have a lot of defense contractors in MA.

Obama took office with Democrats in complete control of CONgress…how much did he cut from that waste in defense spending?

        Ya, I thought so.

      • cherylsass123

Sometimes, but only because 1. The merchant is crooked- many small businesses do that in the ‘ hood to avoid ” being the next one to burn on the block” or 2. They buy $80 of food for someone else who gives them $40 cash or meth.

      • Larry Ham

I think you’re right on both counts. Either way there’s got to be a technological way to stop it.

      • Kovah88

The thing is, FRAUD is FRAUD. Those purchases are NOT VALID with EBT CARDS! If people are abusing them, that is a separate issue. If you want to know more about fraud, ask Michael Grimm.

      • Cemetery Girl

Please work at a grocery store for a little while, you’ll be amazed how it works. A store that does not rely on barcodes is rare. The information programmed into the store’s computer system can vary by chain, but it is pretty uniform to have barcodes for alcohol, tobacco, and anything else deemed innapropriate for people under a certain age to purchase, thus providing a prompt to enter the birthdate of the person purchasing. This is the most visual display of barcode information that people are familiar with. In the computer databases there’s other information: food or non food, taxable, brand, name, weight (if preweighed), price, ect. Alcohol, tobacco, toilet paper, a magazine, dish detergent, these are all some things not covered by food EBT. The computer calculates the price of the items covered by food EBT and will give that total, which there will be a seperate total for after EBT, which this total can including any remaining covered total if the EBT card didn’t have enough to cover the total. There is a very interesting way that items not covered by food EBT can look covered. Some stores have appreciation programs where the shopper earns a percentage discount on later purchases. I have seen before customers that had used their accumulated percentage (which then deducts the percentage off the order before payment form is selected), food EBT was the payment form, and beer was purchased in the order without an additional form of payment. This worked because the percentage covered the alcohol, not the EBT. The percentage discount is treated as it’s own form of payment, which would give observers the impression that food EBT was used to purchase items not covered.

      • Mom&Student

Yep. Complete ignorance at it’s best.
Also, you quote “EBT fraud”. Once again, this is not the typical story of most people. The news is not typical life for most people. And people have traded stamps for money to buy non-food items. THAT’S NOT MOST PEOPLE ON THE PROGRAM USING THE CARD!

      • Stephen Barlow

Actually, there are NO restrictions on the ‘quality’ of food, nor the price. Only on alcohol, tobacco products, medications, non food items and restaurant food. I get lunch in the grocery “on the card” all the time.

Funny thing that the nutjob hate wingers want to forget is: the EBT card will REJECT unqualified purchases automatically. I always have a few dollars of cash purchases left over because the register will NOT ALLOW food stamp fraud. Most food stamp fraud is in the application process. Even not complete the 24 hour work requirement can’t happen anymore.

Less fraud happens with food stamps than with Defense contracts. End Defense Fraud and you will PAY for SNAP and TANF completely… for the next 40 years.

      • buricco

A lot of people, I think, *want* there to be further restrictions on what can be bought on food stamps; iirc, the agency responsible for the program believes it would be a waste of time and taxpayer money to implement them.

      • Stephen Barlow

Well the liars about food stamps will say anything they hear on Fox or from any randumb Republican.

      • Floridatexan

I think you’re specifically talking about random drug testing, which has been tried in several states. Might I point out that it costs the taxpayers, makes money for the drug testing firms, and uncovers almost NO drug use.

      • buricco

Actually, I meant making SNAP more like WIC.

      • kid_you_not

What does defense contracts have to do with anything? So I can come up with a program that is less fraudulent than welfare and that would be ok?

      • lizlizzie2

I live in a military town. Defense contracts are huge. Anyone providing services for the military charge more than they do for the other customers in town. Because the government will pay it.

Someone comments what do military.defense contracts have to do with it? It makes up a huge part of the national budget and more fraud exists in that system than in any other budgeted expense; yet, ignorant people (a good portion which are employed by the military) want to complain about who receives food stamps and SNAP benefits and have concluded that coming after those funds will somehow fix the government’s debt. SNAP is one of the least abused systems in our country but media has convinced people of our ill-intentions and, worse, have given those who believe such erroneous reports the belief that they have the right to judge others.

      • Wukfad

That’s bullshit. The only food you can’t buy with SNAP is energy drinks and alcohol.

      • angie497

You’re wrong, actually. There are a number of food items that can’t be purchased with SNAP; energy drinks, on the other hand, *may* be eligible, depending on whether it’s considered a nutritional item or a supplement. And some states have tacked on even more restrictions than the federal guidelines already had in place.

        http://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/eligible-food-items

      • kid_you_not

OK, YOU and others who want these programs should pay for it and leave the rest of us alone. We don’t want to pay for it any more.

      • Helen R. Robare

Oh so if you fall on hard times and/or hit rock bottom…you WON’T use SNAP or any other form of assistance that OTHER tax payers will still be paying for? Good to know. Hope you will enjoy starving to death.

      • Brian_The _Beard

Way to be a dick while buying fancy cheese. You could have said “let’s run it with this card anyway and see if it works.” That way you could have still been a dick with your fancy cheese when it was paid for but I guess you wouldn’t have had a cool story to tell.

      • angie497

So Maike is being a dick but the clerk trying to embarrass a customer *and* being dead wrong with their claims is OK with you?

      • Sheik Yerbouti

I had the very same sort of thing happen as my debit card looked oddly like the state benefits card. Apparently I was buying the wrong baby formula. Which angered me to think that such a thing would be regulated like that. But I can’t take such a thing out on a stupid clerk. And most of the clerks I see these days are very stupid. Far too stupid to realize when they have crossed class lines in a conversation.

      • Brian

        Liar

Good for you, people need to be more informed before they go judging people, you can thank our corporate media like fox for that,I have known a few people who had to rely on food stamps, they were out of work, didn’t get paid enough to buy food for their kids,or were sick, and disabled, none of them liked being there.

      • MS

I disagree – through HS and college I worked as a cashier in a supermarket and pharmacy. Many women have children just to stay on the public dole. NOT all, but many. There are a great many people that consider this their due. And yes, they deserve to be judged, for using taxpayer money and for using their children.

      • Dane

No they don’t deserve to be judged, I also find your ignorance, and bigotry offensive, you obviously haven’t a clue of where taxpayer money goes either, if you went to college, you obviously didn’t learn anything there.

      • Wade Campbell

Well I went to college and even “gradiated too.”

I also worked for Walgreens and I can assure you I was appalled at what Food Stamps would allow people to buy. I also would love to have their medical benefits especially the co-pay for prescriptions.

      • Dane

You can gradiate as you call it from college with a 2.2 GPA, just because you did, doesn’t mean you learned anything, or are intelligent, you seem to be skillful at ignorance, and bigotry, which is unacceptable, you don’t know someones situation, and you have no right to paint them, so I am going judge you, you are an ignorant racist pig.

      • Beth Rose-Acor

I am confused Dane. You are calling the respondents to your posts “bigot” and “racist” yet neither spoke of race, nor did they indicate anything about it. You assume they are racist because they are speaking about abuses in the system. Perhaps you Dane, are the racist.

      • Dane

Beth, you are projecting, that is another line right out of the right wing fascist play book.

      • Beth Rose-Acor

That made no sense at all. You are attacking people, calling them racist when YOU are the only one who even brought it up. Not one of the people you are calling racist said one word about race. You can’t even accept when you are wrong. The tolerant Liberals incite hatred when they have no facts or basis for their prejudices. When you are determined to find racism, you will, even if you are only looking at a child dressed in a tee-shirt that happens to be colored. Your ignorance is appalling!

      • Dane

        You are projecting again.

      • Beth Rose-Acor

Once again, your ignorance is exposed. Projecting???? Do you even know the definition of that? You are a complete and utter moron and a racist one at that.

      • Dane

I know exactly what the definition of it is, and you are projecting once again, its right out of the right wing playbook, the only utter moron, and racist is yourself, and the rest of the right wing idiots.

      • MS

Dane, sweet Dane, you need to put your feet up and relax.

By the way, I am the least right wing a person can be. Just saying what I am seeing.

        Truith.

      • Dane

And my name is James Bond too, Idiot.

      • Stephen Barlow

So what else should the poor be judged for? The House NOT putting a dingle jobs bill on the floor for a vote in 3+ years?

      • Stephen Barlow

YOu are no different then Dane, but then again, you are screaming like a kid with something to hide. Are you a closet racist who never voices her racism in public comments like the one’s listed above?

      • dlws8607

Beth, I don’t think Dane is a liberal. I do think Dane is mentally ill.

      • Stephen Barlow

So you are saying as a FACT that no one who complains about SNAP beneficiaries are racist?

      • dlws8607

Is the “right wing fascist play book” available on Amazon? Did you write it Dane?

      • Dane

I dont know, but it should be, because you idiots are a broken record.

      • Stephen Barlow

        Read the RNC platform.

      • Stephen Barlow

The implication is there in all the ANTI SNAP / TANF rhetoric. Funny thing is, more whited take benefits by 2-1 than minorities. BEcause the Redpublicans have left a generation behind in school and shipped all the career jobs overseas.

      • MS

Hey Dane, again all outraged and in someone’s face. Your hatred of smart people is showing, like a large tumor. You need to be, relaxed….

      • Dane

You are projecting, if you had any intelligence at all you wouldn’t be dehumanizing people who are poor, with your bigotry etc,and if I have a hatred of anything, it would be of fucking idiots like yourself.

      • dlws8607

Dane, you whine about people dehumanizing others and then you do the same thing, only in a far worse manner. Do you really think your approach is effective? I have come to the conclusion that you are a tall, skinny, pimply teenager sitting in your parents’ basement, where you will live for the rest of your life, trying to attack people on the Internet. The funny thing is that the people you are attacking have demonstrated far greater intelligence and reasoning ability then you will ever have. They are also laughing at your childish attempts to upset them.

      • Dane

Ahh” the old if they don’t agree with me, and call me out means they are a pimply teenager in their moms basement, you are projecting again, I know that play as well

      • MMS

        Have a nice day!

      • dlws8607

Dane, I think you need some medication to treat your anger issues. I agree with Beth below.

      • Dane

Ahh” I notice you idiots all think you are Psychiatrists as well, you must watch the one on Fox Boobs, I mean news?

      • Donna Gilbert

First off learn to spell “Graduated” and if you want their “cushy lifestyle”…quit your job give up EVERYTHING you own and go to the nearest welfare office …oh and good luck eating on a 137.00 a month

      • TheDudeAbides

Oh and reveal to everyone that they have part-time jobs, making jusssst enough to stay below the taxable income bracket, so they have jusssst enough to afford getting their nails done, and other, oh gosh, what’s the word? “Bling”.

      • KG

Wade while I do understand that ALL of us are frustrated with the ones who find SNAP & welfare a ‘way of life”, are you saying that someone who is poor should not be able to have something good once in awhile? just asking as I have a meme on my bulletin board that says “while you are B*tching about that snickers bar bought by EBT card our govt just gave Exxon 9000 in tax rebates”.. It just reminds me to not judge them, should their children NOT be able to have a candy bar once in awhile? should they eat “junky crap” food ? thanks

      • Stephen Barlow

EBT cars don’t even [pay for over the counter meds you friggin’ bigoted liar.

      • MS

Dane, Dane, Dane, so much outrage and anger. Relax, Take a chill pill. I learned plenty. Like how not to get all bent out of shape.

Relax. Take a deep breath. Be cool…..

      • Dane

You learned nothing, and bigotry which you are is a display of stupidity, and ignorance.

      • dlws8607

I love the “You have no right to judge” people who are judging when they make those posts. IF MS has no right to judge welfare recipients who misuse our money, Dane has no right to judge MS.

By the way, based on one post, you have no basis to know that Dane “obviously didn’t learn anything there.”

      • Dane

You are projecting again, and I will call a Bigot out anytime, I notice the truth hurts with you idiots.

      • mms

I can’t be a bigot, I am of African descent. I find you offensive. Have a wonderful, funfilled day!

      • Dane

Well a lot of people will sell out if offered enough money, or are brainwashed enough, what a disgrace you are to the African American Community, I am she they have a few choice words for you.

      • Donald Black

do you get angry at these tea party republicans that take our tax dollars and get free caviar, and other luxury items like cars etc? if not then you need to look into that instead of those on food stamps.

      • KG

you are so correct Donald, some truly do not realize how much money corporations are really getting in “tax breaks” “tax incentives” etc while they are NOT paying taxes. (corp that is)

      • kim dyer

You are VERY wrong if you think “women have children just to stay on the public dole”. You DO realize that “the dole” has NEVER covered the cost of raising a child.

      • dlws8607

Given that I have heard females say that is their plan, I would agree with the earlier poster. Of course, the people engaged in this practice do not have much in the way of reasoning ability so I am not surprised that they want to pop out multiple babies to increase their “income.” By the way, the females I have heard make this claim have been caucasian.

      • kim dyer

How long ago? The rules have changed since the 1960s when I used to hear that.

      • Nick

You worked as a cashier. Somehow this means you know why people have children?

      • MS

Well Nick, since you asked, I used to live in the same community as these welfare moms resided. (Put myself through school and got the hell out of there.) They do, in fact, have children to increase the amount of money they get from the government. They also have children, with different sperm donors because they won’t/don’t use birth control. Spent many years watching this crap.
Face it Nick, some things are apparent. Just got to look and listen……If it is the life that they choose, they should just own it. Say, “this is my life, and I accept it.”

      • Joi Owen

You know, Clinton’s revamping of the whole public assistance system made it hard for any woman to increase her benefits by having more kids. You’re repeating fox talking points by repeating this unfounded claim.

      • dlws8607

You know, just because the laws change, does not mean the people who think having babies will increase their “income” realize the error in their thinking.

      • Donna Gilbert

This is no longer the case …in every state, if you have more children while on welfare you MIGHT get more food stamps but not cash….outdated bull shit

      • KG

while it is frustrating that there are some “lifetime” users, do you really think they just keep having kids for that reason? for real

      • FD Brian

okay, mandate birth control for all welfare recipients, they make a shot you can take every 3 months, every third month the women has to go in to the office, get her shot, she gets her check. She doesn’t get her shot, she loses welfare for a year.

      • KG

You want to control their reproductive rights ? wow

      • FD Brian

I miss read your post, my bad, I was offering a solution to someone who complains about baby momma welfare queens. But birth control should be free for all welfare recipients.

      • KG

🙂 It really doesnt allow us to individually answer thanks and no harm at all regardless of any answer I am curious what we do really all think have a great day

      • Stephen Barlow

That sounds like a lot of work for a few measly crumbs.

Would you say 7 out of 10?

What about Me? I paid taxes for 40 years. I was paying taxes on My newspaper route @ 14. It was a big frigging route that had 2 apartment complexes. But I got up @ 3AM and finished just before school. I usually made a buck tip on a $2 bill each week because I never let the paper get wet or more than 12 inches from the door.

YOu going to judge me in a checkout line, without knowing that I employed 14 people during my life and if it weren’t for a truck accident, I’d still be working.

WOuld you make fun of Me because I have 2 prosthetic legs and kind wobble when I walk too? A fine ‘christian’ you are!

      • GodSchilD

They have changed the system since days of old. Now…..you have a lifetime limit.you can use some years now….years later-but you WILL run out at some point.

Not sure of the exact time.

      • Dawn Hilton Oliveira

That is BS! This whole thing cracks me up. Society goes against abortion but yet don’t want to pay for unwanted children. Let me inform you on a little something. Women do not have children alone, it takes two! Where is the man that is supposed to supporting those children??? Why do you think there has been a crack down on child support? In Florida if you don’t pay you don’t have a drivers license. You try to have to have children alone, pay for day care and work for almost nothing wages and tell me how you fare.

      • mms

Life is lovely. Stop and smell a rose. All is well.

      • Betty J Rousey

Well whatever else, YOU are not the one to judge.

      • Stephen Barlow

Did you know that FOX and CNN are BOTH owned by Rupert Murdoch?

      • Dane

Hello! Hello! Yes, and that is why CNN has gone down the toilet, at one time it wasn’t a bad news channel, like back when Ted Turner owned it, who started it also, Soledad O”Brian was the only one holding CNN together, and they basicly fired her for doing her job as a Journalist, which is not allowed by Rupert Murdoch,or Roger Ailes, good try Bubba.

      • Larry Ham

You’re exactly right, we should go back to the days of Brokaw, Jennings and Rather so that ALL of our news can be brought to us by Democrats.

We don’t need both parties being represented in the media! People only need to hear one side, it’s for their own good!

      • Dane

Actually the people you mentioned were impartial, and detached Journalists, verses now we have infotainment, or right wing propoganda. even notice NBC, never mentions anything about Net Neutrality? or anything about Comcast wanting to buy Time Warner Cable? um, because Comcast owns 51% of NBC? and Fox, that is all a bunch of made up propaganda, and bigotry its not news, as for television news I would Al Jazzera is the best right now, as is RT sometimes, good try Bubba, go do your homework, they we will talk maybe.

      • Larry Ham

        AAAAHAHAHHAHAHA “impartial and detached” AAAHAHAHAHAA.

Hey mensa man! Why did Rather get fired?

      • Dane

I dont have time to argue with someone who chooses to be an idiot, have a good day.

    • TheDudeAbides

      Ha!

    • Stephen Barlow

      GOOD FOR YOU!

    • Mom&Student

Yes ignorant people need to be educated. They assume, assume, and assume. I’m a student and I work. I qualify. I guess I’m trash.

      • Ellen H.

It boggles my mind how many people drink the Faux kool-aid.

  • Trishdy

Reminds me again of all the filthy looks I used to get when using WIC coupons at Stop & Shop when I was a foster parent.

    • R Vogel

      I’m sorry you experienced that.

    • MoodyCreator

I was 3rd in line just a couple weeks ago behind a young couple with newborn twins who was using their WIC for the first time. They had cases of formula, along with a few other things that they seemed to have tried their best to sort in the cart (WIC from other items) but somehow there was a lot of confusion going on between them and the cashier. The couple in front of me started grumbling, first in a whisper, then progressively louder, and from rude to downright mean. The cashier just got more flustered, and the couple was so visibly embarrassed and humiliated that the young woman finally just burst into tears. Her husband/boyfriend/friend just kept saying “sorry”,but that wasn’t enough, the other couple just wouldn’t stop insulting them, saying things about having to work their “asses off all day” only to get to the store behind somebody that has “all the time in the world to go” and how they should be more considerate of the people who buy their groceries, etc, etc. By that time, I had tears in MY OWN eyes and was more than furious but tried to keep quiet so not to embarrass the couple further. Long story short, by the time they finally got up to the cashier, their debit card was declined. First they made the cashier pull out the sale ads and double check a bunch of items, then they started arguing with each other. I couldn’t stand it another second, and said ‘HEY! – That’s called paying the asshole tax and it looks like you’re both overdue! Oh, and I hate when I get behind loud mouth jerks who can’t balance their checkbook.’ As they were staring at me, the cashier mouthed “thank you”.

      • Cemetery Girl

That store failed. I hate when stores fail to train their cashiers. I’ve had to walk a cashier through processing a WIC order (and I was a customer), but the person trying to purchase using WIC appreciated it. Cashiers should have the knowledge to process all transactions and without negative comments. Instead stores would rather train for a couple of hours and customers are left dissatisfied.

  • steve

Wow, these are as inaccurate as the lies they are trying to correct. Does anyone tell the truth the whole truth? So Obama phones do exist just not smart phones. Very few say only the lazy get welfare and yes like all groups White Black Hispanic Conservative and Progressive there are some racists but the vast majority are not. Please stop the race baiting. Lets get together on truth. There are many people of all races playing the system. Lets squeeze them so they look for work. There are many that just need a real hand up. Lets give it to them. Real dollars to get them up and off welfare. There are others that just can’t. Lets give them a little better life.

    • djtejas

They are not “Obamaphones”…the lifeline system was created during the Regan administration…

      • Travis St Jean

Yea some people who yap like they are so ‘informed’ really have no idea about things such as Lifeline, I used to work for SBC and am very familiar with the age of lifeline, we dispute pennies being spent on social spending yet stay away from the brutally generous subsidies big business gets, the expenses of the military industrial complex and it’s various interests, the operating costs of congress and the senate, but yes let’s please take a microscope to social spending, it’s easier to spit on someone lower then yourself then to actually help them Some people self proclaim themselves as ‘awake and aware’ but really are just sheep of a different flock. Anything to take the attention away from the failing US economy, the USD and the American people. I hope everything works out great because things are looking pretty bleak right now for the USA. You may have to actually get some survival tactics from one of these ‘mooches’ as I believe many have no idea how to live that does not depend on ammunition for firearms, grocery stores or throwing cash at.

      • Beth Rose-Acor

and greatly expanded under the Obama administration. Steve is being respectful and speaking the truth, yet he is attacked by Travis and you give him a snarky response. He is right, we have all seen it. There are many people on the system that rob it and use it for all they can get. Those are the ones that upset people. I have watched them buy steak and seafood while wearing very nice jewelry and talking on expensive phones and admit, you all have too. Steve’s point is that this isn;t a Democrat or Republican thing, both sides will never agree and fix it, so we have to have adult conversation without berating each other and yelling “racist” at everyone. On that note, I would like to say that I would rather pay for four years of college and give a person all the welfare they need to get through school, than to pay for a lifetime of welfare to a recipient who uses the system to get free stuff.

      • DrVonEvilPants

Umm no, it was Bush that expanded the the lifeline system. He added cellphones as well as lowered the restrictions in order to qualify for one.

  • Eva

I’d just like to point out something. For 2. Being a member of the armed forces, I know that we make under the poverty rate. And typically the spouse is jobless so they make low money and have to use food stamps at the commissary. So blame the government for giving us a 1% raise and then taking it away…

  • Suzi

None of these scenarios include children (pre school at least)…which insures that you WILL get all the above & the more you have the more you get…As a 50 year old divorcee who could not find a job, I watched endless numbers of unwed mothers with tatoos & reaking of cigarette smoke along with non-English speaking families with taxpayer-paid interpreters come out of the office happy & talking about what they would be getting…I was turned away …the SS worker told me I didn’t know how to “work the system”….

    • Thomas Wayne

      Tell another good one!

    • Jennifer Lynch

My BS detector just went crazy. The “I was turned away and nobody else was” excuse should also be addressed in this story.

    • ErrolKuhn

      I smell BS!

    • MoodyCreator

Did you interview all of those mothers? Is that how you knew they were ALL unwed? PLUS they all smoked and had tattoos? ALL of them, huh. Who exactly were they talking to when they came out? Because it’s not like they’re seen in groups or pairs, like a mini-seminar on freebies (where only those who master “working the system” get an invitation). As far as English-speaking, why do you care? There’s no requirement or law that says only English speaking people can have assistance. When I was a pre-schooler in the late 1960s, my German babysitter and her entire family spoke mostly German with one another, even though they’d lived in Omaha, Nebraska since shortly after the end of WWII. I also had immigrant family members (as did most of my friends) who spoke Danish, Italian, Spanish, German, Portuguese, French, Polish and Filipino. FYI, Suz, it’s still OKAY for people to do that!

    • Judy Jackson

      LIE.

  • Jeff

“who wanted us to remain in Iraq even longer”

Yeah, leaving Iraq worked out well, didn’t it?

    • ErrolKuhn

WE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!! And Bush organized the leaving – don’t forget Iraq TOLD us to leave!

  • FallOutKidd .

Sorry, but, I don’t agree with parts of this article. There are TONS of people who are on food stamps and other government aided programs who think they don’t have to work as hard because of the money they receive. I’ve witnessed it myself and see how some people on welfare live their life. I’m not saying everyone does it. There are people who do everything right and that’s awesome but, there are also people who take advantage. And Maike it’s not that the person didn’t think you were worthy of respect it’s probably because she’s seen many people on food stamps trying to buy expensive stuff that they can’t buy being on food stamps. If you’re on food stamps and can’t afford to buy you’re own food you shouldn’t be trying to buy expensive stuff. You need to live within your means. Welfare programs were made to be a hand UP not a hand OUT.

    • Jai K.

what do you care if they blow their food stamps on expensive stuff? they can’t get more for a month anyway, so they then have to live off ramen for the rest of the month.

      • FallOutKidd .

I care because the money they get from welfare come from your paychecks and my paychecks. I work my ass off and I assume you do too. Doesn’t it bother you that your money goes to lazy people who won’t get a job for themselves or manage their money better? Again not saying all welfare recipients do this but there’s enough to piss me off.

      • DrVonEvilPants

You bitch about these unworthy welfare recipients wasting your hard earned tax dollars, in reality they only get a couple penny’s on the dollar from you, but you don’t bitch about CEOs buying yachts and elevators for their cars off the backs of taxpayers.

Corporations gets billions in taxpayers money, farms get hundreds of thousands of dollars from taxpayers to not grow anything, military contractors get million dollar contracts to make to make fighter jets that are unneeded and will most likely go to languish in the dessert where all the surplus fighter jets go.

But no, continue to bitch about the welfare recipient who bought a pack of cigarettes, a bottle of soda or a video game. Because they’re the scourge of the earth and they’re “destroying” America.

      • Guest

Like FalloutKid, yes, I get pissed off to think that one single penny of MY hard earned money goes to someone too lazy to work, though I readily admit that most recipients of taxpayer money would happily work if they could. The idea that all people on welfare are lazy is crap. BUT, there is fraud and some people know how to milk the system and make a career of it. Yes, one single penny to THAT person pisses me off. But I am equally outraged at ALL the waste of government that you mentioned. Democrats and Republicans both want big government; they just want to funnel the money to different groups of people, and the goal is simply to maintain their own power. I think the best that can be said of lazy welfare recipients is that they are no better than all the unworthy groups of people who get government handouts. (Please add foreign governments, like Israel, to your list of groups of people the US taxpayer should NOT be supporting.)

      • DrVonEvilPants

I’m actually pretty cool with people defrauding the government to get a couple extra hundred bucks to survive. If they found a way to cheat the cheaters, then more power to them.

Of course, I keep forgetting that this is America, we have a proud tradition of hating our “inferiors” while praising our oppressors.

      • FallOutKidd .

I care because it’s my paychecks and your paychecks that give money to government aided programs. I’m not sure about you but I work my ass off and barely make it by and it pisses me off when people on government funding have better clothes, phones, and meals than I do.

      • FallOutKidd .

I care because it’s my paychecks and your paychecks that give money to government aided programs. I’m not sure about you but I work my ass off and barely make it by and it pisses me off when people on government funding have better clothes, phones, and meals than I do.

  • Elizabeth Singleton

I consider myself an example of this discussion. I went from $50k a year to being disabled. At age 54, divorced and living alone, tanks to the ACA I was provided health insurance. I received SNAP. My condition is such that you would look at me and not know I am legitimately disabled.
    1. I am definitely embarrassed to use “food stamps” and felt every time that I needed to justify it and explain it. The cashiers were always nice, but people in line weren’t always nice.
    2. I did not know what was allowed and what wasn’t, so don’t assume we are trying to get away with something.
    3. I can’t physically cut and chop and sharp objects are definitely dangerous. That means I had to buy premade meals and salads. Most things are not packaged for one. Don’t presume that people are lazy or not budget conscious.

Then I leave the store in my Mazda miata and people judge me as scamming. I have little equity in it. I owe a car payment. It is unlikely to need any repairs in the next few years. Being disabled with no income means I cannot qualify for a new car loan or if I did the interest would be substantially higher. It would be financially stupid to trade in my car in an attempt to meet other people’s expectations that I drive a junker.

I was granted SSDI on my first application. Less than 20% of first applicants are approved. The government has judged my situation, it is not the public’s right or responsibility to do so. None of us can know someone else’s life or body or pain. People need to find something better to do with their time and mind rather than evaluating others worthiness.

I worked for over 35 years and paid taxes. The government isn’t giving me your tax dollars, they are giving me mine.

    • Helen R. Robare

I too worked for 40 years and am now disabled and on SSD. I too get food stamps ($78 a month) and always use a real low/soft voice when I say “My food will be on food stamps”. The cashiers are very nice but I always explain why I buy the orange/mango sparkling water (10 for $8.00) instead of plain water (makes me vomit) or milk and juice which also make me vomit! Same goes for pre packaged food I buy. I have no vehicle so I have to take our local bus. You are limited on the bus to “only the amount YOU can carry on and off the bus) which, in my case, is about 3 full bags. So I buy the groceries that are easy to carry and that won’t cause me to have to make another trip tomorrow. I try to buy potatoes and rice and veggies and meat but they get really heavy so I have to take a taxi back from the store if I buy these things. And I do use the taxi for this ONCE a month (which is as often as I can afford). I only hope those who are so against the poor someday become poor/below poverty level and have to use SNAP benefits! I would bet my entire SSD check that they would be singing a different tune then!

      • lizlizzie2

Helen, I understand how you feel. At the time I went through everything that resulted in my being classified as disabled, I went from a size 14 to a size 2. I wasn’t hungry and when I would eat I would get sick a lot. I had to buy some things just for the calories and drink a lot of flat coke and club soda as I can’t drink milk or juice either. The sad part is that we legitimately receive a benefit to which we are entitled, our doctors have advised us of what we need to do nutritionally and to compensate for our situations, yet, because of other we feel the need to explain our medical situations to total strangers. It is disgusting that our society heaps guilt on us to the point we feel the need to justify our choices at the grocery store.

Interestingly, when someone does make every effort to comply with the rules of purchase and to get the most for the benefits they have available they are also criticized. A short time after my post above, I was behind a young man who was using his benefits to buy groceries and the items for a baby – formula etc. – using WIC and SNAP and coupons from the newspaper, and so on. He divided his order into 4 separate orders so that he could get what was needed, keep things sorted as applicable to the benefits at hand, and sort out those things he needed to pay cash for. None of the items were luxuries.

An older man behind me started loudly criticizing the young father for having multiple orders, for having benefits, and for having a child he couldn’t afford.. Then he kept mumbling under his breath, bitching. I made some comments to the older man and he was against abortion and planned parenthood was an agent of the devil. In a fake astonished voice I told him, “so you deny this young family the ability to afford birth control, decide for them that abortion is wrong and then criticize this young father for doing everything he can to provide for his wife and child. The problem isn’t him, it is that you are a hypocritical bigot.” (Yes, the young father was Hispanic.) I then turned to the young man and said, “Don’t get flustered, take your time, I don’t have to be anywhere. I am on disability,” while flagrantly taking out my SNAP card, sorting my groceries into 2 orders, slipping past the older man, and grabbing a Snicker’s bar and a Starbucks coffee drink from the fridge at the edge of the checkout line. The old guy had obviously thought I was a professional caucasian middle aged employed woman. To make myself feel better I asked the young man if he had a picture of his baby and told him I had just had my first grandchild and and we proceeded to show off baby pics on our smart phones.

That day, I had 2 packages of frozen shrimp in my groceries too. In the past I would have explained that I had a buy one get one free and a $2.00 coupon so 1.5 pounds of shrimp total cost me $6 and made 6 meals for me and from the shells I would make stock for another meal too. That day I didn’t explain to anyone.(I then requested assistance taking my groceries out so the older guy had to wait while he was checked out and then for the cashier to bag his groceries.

I have no doubt the old guy went home and complained to his kids and whomever would listen. I was so angry at how he had acted towards that young, stressed father. Since then, I have not made any explanations for my use of SNAP benefits or my choice of groceries. Nothing I do is going to change his mind or anyone else’s. But, I realized it was time for me to stop letting the holier than tho attitude of the self-righteous make me feel bad and that they are not entitled to an explanation.

  • This story lost me on the first point. Just because they’re not eligible that means they don’t get them? Of course not. I know quite a few that get them somehow or another. The next point may be true but it is totally discredited when he throws the race card in. Up until now I never knew that only black people drive Escalades. I must have been seeing things and may need to adjust my meds. Not too mention the ad at the head of the article says get your free government subsidized phone and of course there’s a picture of a smart phone lol.Next point all he proves is that Welfare Queens probably come in all forms. There was, is and will be abuse of any program like this. Point number four he actually admits is true. Sure there are other factors involved but if someone says this is the largest numbers of people on welfare in history, that’s not a myth. Next, only lazy people get welfare. Only the lunatic fringe of the right mayand I stress may believe this. Certainly there are people who fall in hard times, working single parents, disabled and the list goes on that are not lazy and through no fault of their own need our help but there is abuse and it is wide spread. Lastly, you cannot say that it is to expensive by stating how much one person receives per month. What is the total cost. How much is wasted in fraud and the machine it takes to run it? Personally I’d be happier to know that people who need it are getting more if we’d just get rid of the waste through fraud, abuse and bureaucracy. This writer’s attempt at debunking is bunk. If you believe it go drink some more Koolaid. I’ll continue to call out those on both sides that spread this kind of nonsense and seek to profit off of it.

    • DrVonEvilPants

Are you seriously trying to claim you never heard of the “black man and his Cadillac” stereotype? That stereotype and the welfare queen stereotype is older than me.

You must be new here, welcome to America.

  • Joe

Funny I worked at a college in Texas, and yes Illegal immigrants qualified for financial aid to pay for college. So I’m not sure this isn’t
    a left winged publication.

    • Karen Tuttle

The article says food stamps and nothing about college. And most undocumented get financial aid as foriegn students.Which means supposedly they live in another country and come here for school. You speak of things you do not know.

      • Beth Rose-Acor

and since Obama received aid as a foreign student and filed a foreign student status, you assume HE lived in another country right?

  • Elf W.

“If you’re a welfare recipient and you have a nice phone, it’s not from the
government. End of story.” But that isn’t the end of the story. It means that you have enough expendable income, courtesy of the assistance you receive, to pay for a nice phone and the outrageously expensive data plan that goes with it. I’ve seen the argument that unemployed or underemployed people MUST have smartphones so they can send and receive email and get a job. The public library has computers with internet for anyone to use that taxpayers are already funding. The smartphone is a convenience, not a necessity.

As far as racial stereotypes are concerned, I’m thinking the author here is the one with the problem. The only Escalade drivers I see around town are white, so the thought that it is a “black person” car is absurd; and it never occurred to me (until the author suggested it) that the term “Welfare Queen” might be race specific.

And to address the author’s assertion that able bodied adults can only stay on SNAP for 3 months: let’s talk about the number of people who are deemed “unfit for work” and receive disability (and SNAP benefits) every month for the rest of their lives. There are 8.8 million adults (age 18-65) who are on disability; this represents over 4% of the adult US population. Per the SSA website, these 8.8 million people receive an average of $1100 per month with an annual cost over $10 Billion per year… every year for the foreseeable future. And this doesn’t even take into account dependents of those on disability. So while, an ABLE bodied individual may be on SNAP for only 3 months, there’s 8.8 million who will never get off it. Most of these people are truly disabled (there is some fraud and abuse, but probably not even 10%); what is disturbing is how many people are disabled due to their own lifestyle choices: COPD due to smoking and obesity. I’ve not seen any data on what % of individuals on disability have effectively put themselves there, but I’m confident the number is huge (at least compared to people “faking” health/mental issues). Either way, to assert that SNAP isn’t a problem because able bodied people can only stay on it for 3 months is to leave out some crucial information.

Every partisan article or blog (conservative or liberal) omits information that doesn’t fit their paradigms; this author just seems less able to conceal that.

    • Karen Tuttle

It means that you may have had your phone before you lost your job or like a friend of mine ,your phone was a christmas gift. My daughter has a great phone with a touch screen, unlimited talk,,text and web access. i bought it used and have a pre paid plan of 35 bucks a month. That makes you idiot of the day.Just because the racial aspect of things is lost on you does not mean that it is not a real problem. As you read some of these comments from folks complaining about non english speaking people and girls with kids just so they can get benifits.Believe me the author is correct about the racial stereotypes spewed from people with no idea what goes on in the world. And why in the world do you have a problem with disabled people getting help, what do you expect them to do? Crawl in a whole and die to keep from needing help.So no, snap is not a problem when the people it helps can not work at all.Your arguments about this article are completely invalid and make you look like one of those people that thinks anyone can just make a great living no matter what.

      • Beth Rose-Acor

I am white and used to drive an Escalade, so your point is mute as well. The previous post wasn’t saying he is not in favor of the disabled receiving benefits. Anything to twist words and try to neatly tuck things into one side or the other huh?

      • Guest

Even if someone had a nice phone prior to losing a job, $35 a month is nothing to sneeze at. If it’s a pre-paid plan, the answer is easy: CANCEL it, fool. Get a plan for 10 cents per minute to schedule job interviews, use it minimally, and go to the library to submit resumes online. Smartphones are luxury items, plain and simple.

And Karen, I do not get the impression that Elf W was saying that disabled people shouldn’t have help. Just that the author glossed over the point that there are, in fact, millions of people permanently on SNAP. These people shouldn’t, as you say, die to keep from needing help, but it’s a little hard to feel too sorry for someone who has made poor lifestyle choices (be it smoking, unhealthy eating, or being sedentary) that has created “unfixable” health problems that makes them permanently dependent on government handouts from people who have made better choices.

  • Donna Gilbert

Here:’s a great idea..everyone mind their own business. If your so “jealous” of people who are on welfare…QUIT your job, give up EVERYTHING you own and head on down to your local welfare office…you’ll be more than welcomed

  • TheDudeAbides

Ok. Then why do those on welfare, mostly Blacks in my area, (and this is proven, since my wife says they come in to register for work at her staffing firm), only work when they want to work. The women here focus on getting their hair done, nails, fancy phone, etc. instead of using the gov’t assistance for bettering their lives. People who have been recently laid off cut back on spending. Welfare seems to enable them to stay on welfare longer instead of helping them to wean off it. I think the gov’t shoild make it harder to apply for welfare; also there should be term limits and a don’t work/don’t receive benefit clause.

  • Guest

So the number of blacks who receive welfare is equal to the number of whites, but blacks only make up 12% of the population. So far from “debunking” anything, the author shows their bias.

  • Mark Trail

This article is ridiculous…it tries to mask the FACTS with cleverly placed lies.

  • Larry Ham

This is full of lies and distortions and I can’t believe there are people who actually believe this partisan nonsense.
    1. Illegals DO in fact get welfare, including food stamps. Look up Auntie Zeituni, the President’s aunt! She got EVERYTHING from food, clothing, housing, etc. despite being deported. TWICE!
The terrorists who bombed the Boston Marathon had all these benefits as well.
    2. The F35 fighter jet boondoggle was a bipartisan waste of money, it was voted on by many liberal congressmen who also buy votes with welfare giveaways.
    3. People on welfare get a LOT more than $134 per month. On top of those SNAP benefits are EBT cards, Section 8, Medicaid, SCHIPS, etc.

  • yorkvilleresident

In case the republicans haven’t heard or are hiding under rocks, welfare queens went out of favor in the 1970’s. Remember Reagan? He changed the laws. I’m sick of hearing welfare queens. They don’t exist. People on welfare need it. Since the jobs they’d have don’t exist, what else can they do? Or as the republicans say, starve.

  • Shinjo Dun

You left out the conservatives favorite parts about the Obamaphone. It (as mentioned) is part of the Lifeline program, which was started by Reagan (and expanded to cell phones under G. W. Bush).

  • Susan MacDonnell

sadly, those who have absolutely no intention of ever changing their ignorant opinions will still not be swayed by information such as this. Bigoted ignorance is a choice… one that millions of Americans make daily… They have way too much of their own self-perception tied up in holding on to their opinions, and no amount of objective information will sway them. They might have to alter their entire worldview — Egads!

The tools of racism have changed since lynchings and cross burnings, but the message of hate by “good Christians” is still strong through out the RED party. I mean these guys got Marco Rubio to hate Latinos and Allen West to vote to starve Black children and deny them medical care.

    How sick is THAT?

Must be nice to be a welfare and have nicer things then myself. I am a combat vet with 3 combat tours. I struggled to get employment now working 2 jobs to just make it by. Tried to get assistance and was denied. Some people haven’t done shit in their life and get assistance. I am now facing foreclosure to my house and hardly have enough food on my table. I go with maybe one meal a day while these people go and get shrimp and lobster and I go get roman noodles. This article is so full of BS and holes it isn’t even funny.

    • Matt Peters

Considering 80% of people on food stamps and 89% of people on TANIF(welfare) have jobs , just low wage ones. You’re entire belief structure is wrong. Not to mention the Internet is a requirement in the modern world to not only get jobs but for most aspects of life. In most area’s a smartphone is the cheapest way to do it. I love how Liberials try to make EVERYTHING about race. I know plenty of white people who drive escalades – who take advantage of the welfare system. Just because I don’t want to give my tax dollars away to someone who can afford iPads, iPhones, etc. Does not mean because they are black.

The “Obamaphone” is actually a Bush era program. c. 2008 The gubament has nothing to do with it. It is entirely funded by cell phone companies.
So there are no tax dollars going to it. However you mutts forking over ass loads of money each month are supporting it. How many of you really need a cell phone? If you had to could you go an entire week without it? What about a month? I went 30 years with-out one. Then I had to have one for the company I worked for.

    • angie497

Having a phone isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity – which is the reason that Reagan approved the Lifeline program back in the 80s. Are you not aware that for a sizable proportion of cell phone users, that cell phone is their only phone? Do you not realize that for some people, having a cell phone makes far more practical sense than keeping a landline phone?

  • GM Jay

Here’s my thing about EBT/SNAP. Part of the goal of the program is not only to get food to families who need it, but GOOD food. There’s a cool little thing that a local farmer’s market I frequent does. For every $ you pay in SNAP you get $2 worth of tokens to spend at the market. What an encouragement to buy healthy stuff! I think SNAP programs should have a mandatory training or at least reading material on how to buy healthy food and cook for yourself if possible, instead of all the boxed crap some folks buy out of sheer ignorance/need for convenience. What do you all think?

    • lizlizzie2

Part of the problem is that the boxed crap is a lot less expensive than fresh fruit and vegetables. It is a problem that affects the elderly on social security as well as those on SNAP.

  • sa

Interesting that there are almost as many whites as there are blacks on welfare. Considering that blacks only comprise 1/3 of the population, this means that if you are black you are twice as likely to be on welfare than if you are white.. i dont like it when people fudge the numbers to their own end. There is a reason such a large percentage of black people are on it.. but nobody wants to address the rampant ignorance and cycle of low culture. Running around your neighborhood talking that ignorant ghetto smack.. always calling eachother n-word this and n-word that.. its just sad. If youand your friends call eachother that, youre probably both right. The n-word transcends skin color.. its a lifestyle,

  • In Canada we don’t have food stamps or special cards. People are given a basic amount for food and shelter. The amount is about $600 a month and is deposited in their bank account. They can also pick up a cheque at a local municipal building. What they spend their money on is their choice. If they want to waste it all on expensive food during the first week they won’t get any more money for the next 3 weeks and will go hungry.

Are there any other countries which dehumanize people by giving them food stamps or food stamp cards which are easily identifiable by cashiers in stores? Why not just let people buy whatever the hell they want without restriction. It works everywhere else.

  • cherylsass123

Or those on disability because of a psychological-challenge that never allowed them to work hard enough, FAST ENOUGH, to multitask and do 30 hours of work in just 8 hours; or maybe 4-10 hours per shift depending upon how many hours Bentonville, AR allots their store manager that week. ( Or maybe, because of the former, was only able to hold a temporary position for 1-90 days.)

  • kid_you_not

What lies. Illegals use fake IDs to get welfare. The number of
Whites on welfare is not the relevant figure and you know it – seems
only apologists for Blacks on welfare cling to this notion. What
proportion of Blacks vs proportion of Whites are on welfare?

Why do you cite SNAP as if that is the only program?

You are a dishonest writer and you know it..

  • Michael Pryor

#5 is not proof of anything–it’s a presumption at best.
And the number of those on welfare HAVE skyrocketed under Obama–any excuse you’d like is fine, but that’s true.

And some conservatives DO assume that illegals receive food stamps. I think it’s a safe assumption because illegal immigrants are given access to the country by breaking our laws and our government does nothing about it.

The rest are accurate though. I’ve heard far righters suggest that it’s only inner city blacks and they all use the money for other needs.
We shouldn’t judge until we walk in their shoes–but I think I’m preaching to choir on that one.

  • ChristianEconCom

Obviously the largest welfare recipients are people like the Kochs, Waltons, and Romneys of the world, simply via capitalism. If they had jobs they could possibly make a case.

The real shame is that those in poverty are the newest group that can be vilified, lied about, and made to feel less human. Most of the people I see around my hometown are the Working Poor. There are a few who live off the system multi-generationally, but I will bet it is less than 1 in 100. Where did our compassion as a country go? If we all have that elitist attitude, then the terrorists DO win. They’ve got us fighting amongst ourselves instead of finding real solutions to poverty and hunger in this country.

WAIT a minute. Its nice to share these fuzzy facts but the problem is that you compare total welfare recipients without the context of percentage of the population. Just tell the truth and let people decide.

  • Robert Undisclosed

What a lie this is. You must use ratios because whites make up 77.7% of the U.S. population, as compared to blacks only making up 13.2% of the U.S. population.

It isn’t even close regarding the black total population, compared to whites. Here are the facts, with references :

U.S. Food Stamp Program Receipients 41,700,000 total/ White vs. Black

    U.S. Census total population estimate 2014 : 318,857,056

    U.S. total black population (13.2%) : 42,089,131

    U.S. total white population (77.7%) : 247,751,933

    U.S. blacks receiving welfare (23.6%) : 9,841,200

    U.S. total black population on welfare : 9,841,200 divided by 42,089,131 (Total U.S. black population) = 23.38%

    U.S. white population receiving welfare (37.6%) : 15,679,200

    U.S. total white population on welfare : 15,679,200 divided by 247,751,933 (Total U.S. white population) = 6.32%

23.38% of the total black population in the U.S. receives FOOD STAMPS.

6.32% of the total white population in the U.S. receives FOOD STAMPS.

Wow, what a load of bullshit this chump is pedaling. Let’s take this on, one point at a time.

    6. Illegal immigrants receive food stamps – the assertion that illegals CAN’T get foodstamps, is complete bullshit. Please watch the following, in her own words. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXDhMvFoXrc Nuf said about that one.

5: The “Obamaphone”: You can believe that the Federal Lifeline Program does not support smart phones, but here’s yet another video showing new smartphones being given to welfare recipients. Facts suck, huh? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY4cy95VFes The company featured in the aforementioned video is still in business and clearly offers smart phones as part of the taxpayer subsidized plan. It offers a plan with unlimited DATA (smart phones only) with unlimited text for federally subsidized rates. So, on this issue you are also full of shit.

    4. The Welfare Queen: I love the fact that you paint this as racist criticism of the black community, and your evidence that its “racist” is rooted in the claim that there’s only one percentage point difference between black and white recipients of welfare. You cite someone’s personal blog as the source for this information. If course, this is all complete bullshit. According the a PEW Research Center study done in 2013, More than 30 percent of blacks have been on some form of public assistance, compared to 15 percent for whites and 22 percent for hispanics. So, blacks use welfare TWICE AS OFTEN as white people, and nearly 50 percent more often than hispanics. And, blacks remain on public assistance EIGHT TIMES longer. So fuck you, you lying ass racist piece of shit. The numbers aren’t anywhere close.

The problem lies in the work ethic and moral character of the black community. It’s been on the decline for decades. Do yourself a favor and look into the statistics just in the black community. You’ll see that in the areas of crime and incarceration, drug use, single parent households, and the frequency and duration of public assistance is rising rapidly. In the 60s and 70s when then country was ostensibly much more “racist” according to black pundits, the statistics are complete disparate when measured against what we see in 2015. It’s a serious problem that comes from within the black community, but nobody wants to talk about it, because that would mean admitted that you’ve been doing a very poor job at raising good, upstanding citizens that are prepared to make a better life for themselves. It’s always easier to blame “whitey” for all your problems.

    3. Obama is the “food-stamp President”: The best part about this one is, you debunk you own point in the first sentence. “It’s true but it started before Obama was in office…” Seriously?! I won’t insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said (in the immortal words of William F. Buckley). During the 2012 election, it was claimed that there are more people receiving some form of Federal public assistance than there are people work full time in the entire country. This statistic is verified by the 2013 statistics of the Census Bureau. Just the Food Stamps program expense is nearly 80 billion per year and it’s increased 212.3 percent (exactly) just during Obama’s time in office. This is mostly because, by executive order, removed the welfare-to-work requirement from the law, but also because his shitty economy still festers at the same stagnant levels.

    2. Only lazy people get welfare: I don’t believe only lazy people get welfare. There are some people that use it in the manner for which public assistance programs are intended – TEMPORARY. There are, however, far too many people, the highest percentage of which are from the black community, that abuse public assistance and spend years, decades and even generations not working and collecting public assistance. It’s not racist to point this out, it’s simply a fact. I’m amused, however, by your attempt to turn this into a discussion about the military as a way to deflect the “lazy” title. It’s a sad commentary that you would push the greatest Americans (of all colors) in front of a train just so you can hustle your narrative. Let me be the first to say “Fuck You” for that one. Just to finish the point about the Military, their use of food stamps represents about 1.5 percent of the total use. Almost statistically insignificant. Pathetically, you undoubtedly voted for the fool that’s currently in the White House, who has been the most hostile towards the military in my lifetime. This is the same person who lets illegals cross the border the millions, which lowers wages in unskilled markets, which adversely affects the black community to the most. But I digress. Yes, there ARE many lazy people who receive welfare, many of them generational recipients from the black community (again, the highest percentage statistically).

    1. Welfare is too expensive: It IS too expensive. Try to minimize the costs by listing the cost per person… that’s folly for fools who don’t understand the nuance. The costs of just the actual welfare program is the second largest entitlement expense for the Federal govt. at 80 billion dollars. It’s TOO EXPENSIVE and climbing rapidly.

So, there are some real facts that completely debunk the individual claims and the overall tone of this tripe. If you want to be racial, then that’s up to you. You’re always welcome to your own opinion, but not your own set of facts. You’ve artfully dodged real facts to paint this narrative that everything is not as it seems. Well, the truth is, everything IS as it seems and people need to know just how full of self serving shit, you really are. Spend more time helping your community to stand up on their own two feet and stop waiting around for the gravy train. It’s not coming. If you make living a life of poverty and public assistance more acceptable by spewing shit like this, you’ll be responsible for even more people in the black community continuing to make the same mistakes of the past. Get your shit together and take some pride in the accomplishments that will result. Stop being so obsessed with the color of your skin.

Number 6 is wrong. My ex was the case handler since the 90’s. She was the only Spanish speaker in the office, so those calls were all routed to her. Ellen, good for you! Why do so many people think that people want to be on welfare? Granted there are a few but most people would rather have a good paying job. I hear the complaints about how we live on steaks etc when the average person can not. I have worked since I was 17. I am on welfare food stamps because I am now retired and do not make enough. I get $100 a month. When I do purchase steak it is usually the family pack and on sale. Since I do not eat a lot at one time, one steak usually gives me two meals. I have to budget very carefully because as we all know $100 does not go far. Plus I refuse to eat beans everyday just to make someone else happy. Hope everyone is good and GOD bless.
